Pierre Bonnard
Pierre Bonnard ( 3rd October 1867 - 23 January 1947 ) was a french painter and printmaker, as well as a member of Les Nabis. In 1891 he met Toulouse-Lautrec and began his journey as an artist. His first show was at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in 1896. In his twenties, he was a part of Les Nabis, a group of young artists committed to creating work of symbolic and spiritual nature.
Bonnard is known for his intense use of color, especially via areas built with small brushmarks and close values.
Bonnard's artwork :
Table setting under the lamp
French window
The dinning room in the country
Place clichy
Table set in a garden
Women in the garden
The effect of Japonaisme on Bonnard did not immediately lead to the use of the brilliant colours of his later work but rather to the flattening of forms, through limited modelling of the figure, and of space by distorting perspective and exploiting “decorative” elements such as fabrics or wallpaper. This is well illustrated by the four panels of Women in the Garden.
Elements of design:
Lines :
Used 3 vertical lines to separate 4 different types of women in the garden. Besides that, lines with different structure used to create body figure for the women.
Shapes :
Circle being drawn as polka dots for the dress style of the 1st women. Square used for the dress texture of the 3rd women. Other than that, not much fixed or clarify in shapes in the artwork above.
Value :
Light color and dark color used to produce how colorful a world can be with the nature.
Color:
Green used as the color of the leaves and brown for the roots and branches and vary color being used.
Texture:
Visual texture
Alignment:
Vertical alignment to paint from the 1st women till the 4th women from left to right.
Principles of Design:
Harmony:
Harmony is obviously present in this artwork because the artist used the color which close to the real world.
